Comment Of The Month:
Sabre Employment Ltd.
Sabre’s Chief Executive Stephen Parr MBE is blunt about it. “I disliked appraisals and personal development plans. The scheme I inherited from the NHS was weak, ineffective and very time consuming with few tangible benefits. For a number of years we were without a formal appraisal system preferring to use a day-to-day informal management support and development approach. The old-style historical paper appraisal just gathered dust; such is the fate of many systems because of their inability to be flexible to changing needs.”
Stephen was sceptical about all PDP systems and needed some convincing that what
he was about to be offered would help him to positively review his position.
“I did not want to look at
at first. I thought it was another waste of time and frankly just a sales opportunity. One of my colleagues, however, had a very different view about personnel and development issues and was determined to re-introduce a formal appraisal system; I agreed to listen to what was on offer.”
And after 6 months, Stephen Parr has had an astonishing change of heart. “After much scepticism on my part, I finally took a closer look at this new system. I realised that not only does it work effectively as a user-friendly PC based system, but it is also designed to be fully reflective of Sabre’s particular needs rather than an ‘off the shelf, one size fits all’ product.
It actually makes appraisals an enjoyable process – which amazes me!”
